Muslims in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region are observing the fasting month of Ramadan "normally and freely," local Muslims said in a video link.

The video was released at a news conference held by the region's government on Sunday.

During Ramadan, local Muslims practice religious activities in mosques or their own homes according to their own free will, and these rights are protected by law.

This year's Ramadan began on April 13. Over the 30-day holy period, Muslims fast during the daylight hours, abstaining from food and water.
